Raquel García-Tomás

(Barcelona 1984)

Raquel García-Tomás is a composer specialized in interdisciplinary creation who completed her Doctorate at the Royal College of Music.

In 2020 she received the National Award of Music 2020 (Spain), “for the interdisciplinary and innovative character of her personal musical language”. Raquel was awarded with El Ojo Crítico de Música Clásica 2017 granted by RTVE (Spanish Radio and Television Corporation), “for the originality of her artistic approaches and the use and combination of her musical language with new technologies and video creation”.

Raquel’s music has been premiered all around Spain in venues such as Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona), Auditorio Nacional de Música (Madrid), L’Auditori  (Barcelona), Palau de la Música Catalana, Teatre Lliure, Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, Palau de la Música de Valencia, Auditorio de Zaragoza, Teatro Español, Teatros del Canal, La Casa Encendida o el Auditorio 400 del Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.

Highlights of her career include collaborations with the English National Ballet, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Dresdner Musikfestspiele.

Her works have also been performed in Berlín, Dresden, Karlsruhe, Köln, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Budapest, Vienna, Orleans, Lyon, Basel, Lausanne, Porto, Lisbon, Edinburgh, Nagoya, Cairo, Rosario, Buenos Aires and especially in London, where Raquel lived for six years. She has received commissions and collaborated with the Oslo Sinfonietta, Phace Ensemble, Ensemble Contemporáneo de la Orquesta de Cadaqués, Joven Orquesta Nacional de España, (JONDE), Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, Orquesta Camera Musicae, Experimental Funktion, CrossingLines Ensemble, Ensemble Sonido Extremo, Cosmos Quartet, Barcelona Clarinet Players, Barcelona Reed Quintet, BCN216 and PluralEnsemble, among others.

Within the framework of opera creation, she has taken part in  DIDO Reloaded (2013), together with Xavier Bonfill, Raquel García-Tomás, Joan Magrané and Octavi Rumbau, produced by Òpera de Butxaca i Nova Creació Barcelona and, thanks to the opera Go, ÆNEAS, go! has been awarded the Neuköllner Oper’s Berliner Opernpreis’14. In 2015, she premiered her chamber opera disPLACE – Història d’una casa, text by Helena Tornero and stage direction by Peter Pawlik, at the MusikTheaterTage Wien Festival, with further performances in Teatros del Canal within the season 2016/17 of the Teatro Real in Madrid. Within the season 2017/18, she premiered the monodrama Ballena azul, text by Victoria Szpunberg, for one actress, large orchestra, choir and electronics, at the National Theatre of Catalonia, TNC, under the stage direction of Xavier Albertí and musical direction of Edmon Colomer. In 2019, she premiered the opera buffa Je suis narcissiste (I am narcissistic) libretto by Helena Tornero and stage direction by Marta Pazos, within the seasons of the Teatro Real de Madrid, Teatro Español, and the Teatre Lliure de Barcelona. The International Opera Awards 2020 nominated Raquel’s opera Je suis narcissiste for Best World Premiere and has been awarded with an Alicia Award from the Catalan Music Academy in the Interdisciplinary category.

In May 2022, the Barcelona and Catalonia National Symphony Orchestra, OBC, premieres its symphonic-choral work Suite of Myself. A commission from L’Auditori (Barcelona) that should start from Bach’s music (specifically, the St John Passion, the invention BWV797 and the zarabande of the French Suite No 2). Raquel composed it with fragments of the luminous, solemn and liberating text Song of Myself, by Walt Whitman. The chamber version of Suite of Myself premiered in the Carme cloister of the Castell de Peralada Festival in July 2022.

Raquel received one of the Leonardo Grants 2020 from the Fundación BBVA to develop her new opera Alexina B., along with the French librettist Irène Gayraud and stage director Marta Pazos. This opera was shortlisted for the Fedora Prize 2021. Its world premiere took place on March 18, 2023 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu (Barcelona).
